Tutoring at Victoria

The Centre for Academic Development supports tutors, demonstrators and sessional assistants with training, resources and ongoing support. (When the word "tutors" is used on this website, it generally refers to all part-time, limited-term contract teaching staff at VUW.) Details of workshop offerings are listed below. Contact Amanda Gilbert, x5927 for more details.

Tutor Training

Each trimester CAD offers training for all new tutors and demonstrators. The University's Tutors' Collective Agreement requires that all new tutors undertake three hours of paid introductory training to prepare them to work with students.

The three hour training sessions that we run help tutors to develop confidence in working with students. We introduce new tutors to some basic teaching skills and concepts about learning including ice breakers, getting students involved, common problems encountered in classroom situations and possible solutions, as well as University-wide resources and support.

Demonstrator training

CAD also offers training for new demonstrators which focuses on skills required for for lab-based teaching. Demonstrators will learn about asking and answering questions, formulating explanations for concepts and dealing with common problems that may occur in the laboratory.

Introductory Tutor Training

"Teaching Skills for New Tutors" courses are held two times a year in February/March and again in July. The three hour workshop introduces tutors to some basic teaching skills and concepts about learning. It covers ice breakers, getting your students involved, common problems encountered in tutorials and some possible solutions, University-wide resources and support. The workshop is open to all University tutors/demonstrators and complements School and department-based training and induction sessions.
